My Experience with the Corsair 2 GB USB Flash Drive
So what do say when you loved a product that suddenly let you down? Being an optimist, I will start with the pluses.
I purchased this drive as a way to carry valuable information around with me. It stored things such as databases that I have created and maintain for various non-profit organizations. And there were the personal files – you know all those things you have on your computer that might be lost if you were to come home from a shopping trip and find that your house had burned to the ground. The drive also served as my briefcase and backup for work projects – I work on proposals for projects that average in size from $20 to $100 million. If something catastrophic ever happened to the facility where I work this drive would serve as the companys salvation.
When installed, the drive is as fast as a conventional hard drive and you can access it just as you would any other drive. In other words, it was seamless in its operation and function.
For slightly over a year the drive worked flawlessly and then out of the blue it corrupted one of my database files. Hours later, the entire drive gave a notice saying device not formatted when it was inserted in a USB slot. Luckily, I had backed it up the previous day and the losses were minimal. I reformatted the drive and started using it again, being cautious not to do live edits on the files stored on it. A day later it failed again and once again I reformatted it. Hours later it failed for a third time.
Here is where you say "It has a ten year warranty, so you are all set." Yes it does have a great warranty, but you have to contact Corsair Technical Support to get an RMA. Wait for their approval and then send the drive back at your expense, hoping that they agree with your assessment that the drive is bad. Plus, if you have sensitive data on it you should really be concerned that someone on the other end may find a way to access your files. I did a reformat, then filled the drive entirely with text files and photos and finally reformatted it again before sending it in. You may not be so lucky if the drive is totally inaccessible.
So where do I stand – it has been about 2 weeks since I sent the drive in and Corsair has been in touch with me several time – the latest being notice that the drive was on its way back. I am really gun shy right now and will proceed with caution. The most disappointing thing maybe that I am not sure I can rely on the ability of this drive to work like any other drive with files that I am editing. We will see… maybe if I back up as I go.
